Alien Reptiles and Amphibians: Early Progress Toward Predicting Risk Session 2: Science and Economics of Pre-Import Screening for Animal Species

چکیده

Alien reptiles and amphibians have been relatively little studied compared to other classes of vertebrates. This appears largely due to the fact that most species are cryptic and difficult to notice and because they do not often directly impact humans or their domesticated animals. I compiled a global database of alien reptile and amphibian introductions (with an “introduction” being the human transport and release of an organism outside of its native range and, hence, not under direct human control) in order to better assess how these species are being introduced and to use the data to identify parameters useful for risk assessment (Kraus, in review). These data indicate that reptiles and amphibians have been widely introduced by humans, with at least 5745 introductions of 675 taxa documented in the literature, of which 1060 populations of 322 species have become successfully established. The rate of introduction is increasing exponentially, with a doubling time of just over 27 years (Kraus, in review). Furthermore, although only five populations of alien herpetofauna can be characterized as having been well studied ecologically, a broad diversity of damage is documented to attend the introduction of alien herpetofauna, including ecological, evolutionary, economic, and human-health impacts. As a result of both the rapid growth rate in introductions and the diversity of documented impacts, alien herpetofauna merit sustained management and research attention.

Alien species as a driver of recent extinctions.

We assessed the prevalence of alien species as a driver of recent extinctions in five major taxa (plants, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals), using data from the IUCN Red List. Our results show that alien species are the second most common threat associated with species that have gone completely extinct from these taxa since AD 1500. Aliens are the most common threat associated with extin...

Identifying suitable habitat, uncertainties, and pre-import decisions Session: Science and Economics of Pre-Import Screening for Animal Species

Reviews of studies to predict invasiveness have been carried out by Kolar and Lodge (2001) and updated by Hayes and Barry (2008). A significant body of literature has built up across a range of taxa looking at correlates of invasion success. Several points can be made from this literature. First, while invasiveness cannot be predicted with certainty, statistical approaches can produce models th...

Using Pathway Analysis to Inform Prevention Strategies for Alien Reptiles and Amphibians

Alien reptiles and amphibians are deserving of greater attention that has hitherto been bestowed upon them by managers and researchers. Eradication or control of established taxa will generally be infeasible, leaving prevention of introductions as the primary management tool for controlling herpetological invasions. I analyzed >5,700 introductions of alien reptiles and amphibians worldwide to o...

Exogenous Polysaccharidases for Young Ruminants: A Review Interfacing Nutrition, Economics, and Health

Neonate ruminants possess little cell-wall and starch degrading enzyme activity. Importantly, early establishment of fibrolytic, amylolytic, and proteolytic capacities is influential for the early expansion of the reticulorumen epithelia. Such an early development in reticulorumen fermentation will enable a timely hepatic adaptation to volatile fatty acids assimilation. The early nutrient relea...

Results of a plant screening test with implications for animal screening approaches Session: Science and Economics of Pre-import Screening for Animal Species

Several types of screening tools for precluding purposeful import of taxa with high probability of becoming invasive in a new geography have been developed. Such tools are generally developed through a retroactive test of taxa with known invasiveness in the new range. These taxa should represent the full range of both invasiveness, from never invasive to highly invasive with clear economic and ...
